Practicing Gratitude

This seems an appropriate subject given that the Thanksgiving holiday is already here. It’s been a hard month for me, but bad things seem to have been finding me and my family a lot more even just this past week.

It’s hard sometimes to be grateful when you’re in pain.

I try to focus everyday on all the things in my life I have to be thankful for … And the list is long. I am truly blessed. But there is something especially therapeutic about writing it down, and getting it out there. I was inspired this week by gratitude posts by Under the Apricot Tree and Inside Out, and decided to write my own. A little cliché perhaps, but I ask you to indulge me anyway.

This Thanksgiving week, I am grateful for …

a supportive and inspiring family … a husband who is patient and loving … friends who never give up on me … a dog who is always excited to see me … a cat who hates to get up in the morning as much as I do … clean laundry … a house that smells like freshly baked cookies and freshly brewed coffee … running into students outside of school (and having them be totally baffled that teachers have lives too) … haircuts … a long weekend … hot tea and honey … inspiring music … prayers … hot showers … kind strangers … funny pictures … a glass of red wine … tears of joy and sorrow … good books … God’s promises.

“…And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:14-18
